Values and Policies

I teach piano because I believe music is vital to the quality of life. It made a huge difference to me as a child, and I want to pass that benefit on to others. The relationship between my students, their families, and me is one of fairness, flexibility, good communication, respect, and trust. I will do everything I can to help my students create and reach their music goals.

30 minutes is generally fine for children under 10 and for beginners of all ages. Once a student has reached early intermediate status, I recommend increasing to 45 minutes. Advanced students and highly committed intermediate students do well with 60-minute lessons. Longer lessons give us more time to cover theory, technique, to fine-tune pieces, and to prepare for upcoming exams and performances.

I appreciate hearing about cancellations at least 4 hours in advance. This gives me time to reschedule your lesson and those of other students around the change. I realize that it’s not always possible to give advance notice, and I take that into consideration. I charge for missed lessons only when I don’t receive any sort of communication from you and for times when I arrive for the lesson and nobody is home. (Fortunately, both of these instances are very rare.)

There will be times when remote lessons are preferable or necessary. They include:
Illness of student or teacher
Severe weather that makes driving inadvisable
Location changes (e.g., lessons during vacation)
In these cases, I’ll send you a link for the class. Afterward, I’ll scan and email you the notes from the lesson.

We understand that people have different preferences about when or whether they appear on social media. Your privacy and boundaries are the most important aspect of this to us.
No image or video of any student will be displayed on social media without express permission from them if they’re an adult, or their parent or guardian if they’re under 18. There may be group videos or photos at events or recitals, and permission will be discussed in advance.
That said, we love to share photos and short clips of students learning and playing along with Cynthia, so if you’d like to be included in those we are happy to do so.
